Liverpool Councillor Maria Toolan, quit Labour at the beginning of March 2023 claiming life in the party had damaged her health. In a fiery resignation statement that went viral on Twitter, she said she’d witnessed “the lowest and most dishonest that politics has to offer,” and described her 4 years as an elected Labour Party representative as ‘traumatic’ and ‘painful’.
